A passion for precision

12 Apr 2016

When Grant Smuts’ grandparents started farming in the Robertson area, their dreams and aspirations where great. They loved the land, the climate and the people and knew that they could make a living, build a family and leave a legacy. Today, their grandson Grant Smuts, would have made them proud. After 34 years farming as Smuts Brothers Agri on Klipboslaagte and Lucerne, Grant is enhancing the legacy his grandparents birthed.

He credits his success to his passion for change. Witnessing the growth in the vineyards or embracing the latest technology is what keeps him on top of his game. With numerous accolades such as the Pick ‘n Pay and Shoprite/Checkers’ Supplier of the Year Award in his cap, he humbly attributes his success to the great people he surrounds himself with and his commitment to precision and quality.

“Precision farming requires an unwavering commitment and a sensitivity to resources. We have to take in account what we have been given such as the water resources, talent, terrain and what nature brings. Then you have to keep up with the latest innovation,” says Grant. He uses mainly drip irrigation as he believes it is more manageable and effective. With the current pressure on water resources and the demand from markets and consumers, the effective use of water is now more important than ever before.

Grant is building his own legacy and encourages his children to stick to the basic building blocks of hard work, integrity, precision and innovation in an ever changing environment. With such passion and wisdom, we can look forward to many more accolades from Smuts Brother Agri in the future.
